Miramax Closes Theatrical Deal for "I, Tonya" At TIFF

September 14, 2017

NEON and 30West acquired distribution rights to the Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, beating out competing offers from streaming giant Netflix and several others. The film, starring and produced by Margot Robbie, was a hot property going into the festival.

The choice of a traditional theatrical rollout as opposed to a (more lucrative upfront) streaming deal gives the film a chance to play off the hype surrounding the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics, in addition to putting Robbie on the awards track this season.

“This film means the world to us and we’re really happy to find a distribution partner in Neon, who loves it as much as we do,” the production team said. “From the first meeting we had with them, their passion spoke volumes. They completely captured the essence and tone of our film and embraced the spirit of it through their innovative marketing approach.”
