Amazon's "The Big Sick" Sets Box Office Benchmark
July 5, 2017
The prognosis is good for Amazon Studios' The Big Sick, which set the bar for 2017's highest per-theater average over the June 23 weekend. The Kumail Nanjiani comedy averaged $87k across five screens in New York and Los Angeles, besting the record set earlier this year by Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
Amazon Studios' own Head of Marketing and Distribution, Bob Berney, called the film "a much-needed alternative to the summer blockbusters." Critics seem to agree, as the film currently holds a 97%
Fresh rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The film will continue
to roll out to additional cities in the coming weeks.
