Amazon Studios Makes Oscar History With "Manchester By The Sea"

January 28, 2017

Amazon Studios has made Oscar® history with "Manchester By The Sea", earning the title of the first streaming service to land a Best Picture nomination. When Amazon paid $10 million for the rights to the film at last year's Sundance Film Festival, it was one of the biggest deals in the festival's history. This investment now looks like it is paying off with six Oscar® nominations including Best Actor (Casey Affleck), Best Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams), Best Supporting Actor (Lucas Hedges), Best Director & Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan) and box office success to the tune of nearly $40 million domestically, and climbing. Collecting a Best Foreign Language nomination as well for Iran's "The Salesman", 2017 is off to a strong start for Amazon.
