Amazon Studio’s ‘Late Night’ Secures 2nd Best Opening Average of 2019

On Friday,Amazon Studio’s “Late Night”, starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson,premiered in four New York and LA openings. The Sundance acquired comedy, written by Kaling and directed by Nisha Ganatra, grossed an estimated $249,654 this weekend, with a $62,414 per-theater average. Ahead of its wide release next weekend, “Late Night” earned the second highest PSA of any 2019 film, behind “Avengers:End Game”.

“This is great news for something that’s outside of Marvel [and] explosion movies. It’s been difficult with dramas and comedies, but this shows there is an audience,” said Amazon Studios Head of Marketing & Distribution, Bob Berney. He added that the audience skewed about 65% female and 35-plus. “We noticed a lot of people going together — like four or five women attending together and that’s something we were hoping for.”
